Plastic bags are seen as a symbol of a wasteful society as they are
a form of packaging that is often not essential. Nobel Award winner Al Gore in his presentation on changing conditions of environment told a small story of his sister
.. although 10 years older to him, he was closely attached to her, his father a farmer was one of the biggest cultivators of tobacco, which was supplied to large cigarette manufacturers. His sister in her late teens took up smoking and died young of lung cancer, shocked by the tragic death of his daughter Al Gore's father simply stopped cultivating tobacco.
The point I am trying to make here is of course, to not take plastic
bags in the first place. If you don't take them, they won't make
them. I always carry a few cloth bags, which are stronger and hold
more than the ridiculous 2-items-double-
today.
At malls n superstores it's really not that hard- even if the
checkout person mechanically shoves the goods you have purchased in
a plastic bag , take it out of the bag and say "No, thanks. I'd
rather not waste a bag." The more people refuse, the less
dumbfounded they will be when it happens. So next time you go
shopping, hold your head up proudly as you refuse a plastic bag. You
may not be in a rubber dinghy chasing a whaling boat or pursuing
ivory poachers, but you have made a contribution to the future of
the planet.
I guess we all should make a contribution toward a better
tomorrow
.. Remember collectively we can!
