The following statement has been issued by the Consumers Association of India on 24th February 2008
We strongly feel that the strike of the bank tomorrow and the day after (25th &26th February) and indefinite strike in march is uncalled for and unnecessary. Yesterday at the meeting, because the IBA agreed to consider one point for discussion ( benefit those who did not opt for pension when it was offered to all employees in 1993 ) at a later date, perhaps the unions took it as an indication that if they went on strike the IBA will buckle and give in.
Our point is it does not matter if the stand is right or wrong or who is right and wrong, but the Strike is uncalled for and no public sympathy will be available to the strikers. People are generally disgusted with the frequent strikes. They will only lose any small sympathy the public will have. This strike is nothing but economic terrorism of the Bank unions.
A small weakness demonstrated by the IBA yesterday at the discussions when the IBA representatives and the Bank chairmen agreed to CONSIDER the pension scheme was used as weakness. After all the worker of a Bank did not know very much about the advatages of the pension scheme proposed in 1993. Why did the same unions oppose such a proposal at that time and arre now using the same to strike? Does it not reflect the lack of foresight and absolute blindness of vision of the officebearers of the unions when they opposed the pension scheme?
It shows very clearly that unions of banks are only interested to politicise the issue rather than work for the GOOD of all their employees. The strike tomorrow & the day after is nothing but Econmic Terrorism of the country, the FM.and above all the Citizen-Consumers of this country.
