[India_Vision_2020] 'In quest of The Last Victory' by Navin Gulia

Moderator's Note: This message is about worthy book written by a worthy man. This is the success story of a person, who is declared 100 percent disabled. He has proved that disability is only in the minds and not in body for any achievement. On behalf of India Vision Group, I salute Navin Gulia, who is a source of inspiration for global youth. Navin Gulia is a member of India Vision Group from Delhi. We have also featured him earlier in this group. He can be contacted navingulia (at) yahoo.com - Srinivasan, Moderator)

In Quest of The Last Victory'
Publishers – Pearson Longman
Author – Navin Gulia

This is the story of a child who was considered a slow learner and under-performer. This is the story of a child who suffers every possible setback and loss and health problems and still goes on to play competitive sports at various levels.

At 18 years of age he joins the National Defence Academy for becoming an officer in the Indian Army. At the end of four years of training he opts to be a commando in special forces but gets seriously injured paralyzing his whole body for life. After spending two years in a hospital bed practicing mental calculations and virtual chess, he finds himself in a wheelchair and medical science declared him permanently 100% disabled.

In a wheelchair he goes on to achieve highest educational qualifications and even clearing the National UGC NET lectureship exam in computer Applications after doing Masters in same subject, that too when he could not write with his own hands.

He modifies his own car controls to drive and takes to adventure driving, being the only person to pursue adventure driving in manual transmission cars in the whole world. He also goes on to fly powered Hang-gliders and microlite aircrafts.

He teaches and motivates and starts an organization for the welfare and rehabilitation of underprivileged children. ADAA – apni duniya apna ashiana – our world our home – let us make a better world.

In 2007 this so called `under-performer' child gets the `National Role Model' Award from the President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

He takes on a near impossible expedition to drive from New Delhi to Marsimik La at 18,632 feet, the highest motorable and the most challenging mountain pass in the world. He would drive over 48 hours non-stop to accomplish this mission impossible. Something not attempted and not thought of as possible. Crossing seven of the world's highest mountain passes along the way. Would he succeed?

This book is the story of that `under-performer' child and how he succeeds against all odds.

`In quest of The Last Victory' is the story of victory over self.
An excerpt –

"With a lifetime of sever losses and setbacks behind him and an impossibly steep mountain climb in front, I knew that if I failed this day, life probably would never give me this chance again. My own words rang in my ears:
Our body and mind have infinite ability. Our ability never restricts us, our thoughts do. If we think we can, we can. If we think we can not, we can not.
Destiny and time had brought me to a point where I could prove it beyond doubt."

[India_Vision_2020] "Grow one billion trees" - Dr Abdul Kalam

hi all

Dr Abdul Kalam spent his 80th birth anniversary day in a village near Coimbatore on 15th October 2011.  He also inaugurated a new scheme "dawn of green".  Through this scheme, Coimbatore residents will be planting 2011 trees every week for 52 weeks.  At the end of one year, there will be more than one lakh trees planted.

While launching the scheme, he also appealed to all people to plant one tree at least, so that one billion trees will be planted.  I am re-writing an important part of his Tamil speech for the benefit of members.

Extract from Dr Kalam's speech

"I want to share with you all  an important information.  Myself and my friends reached here from the airport after travelling 300 kilometres in two cars.  That is both the cars have travelled 600 kilometres.    We have used around 60 litres of diesel.

Every litre of diesel emits 2.7 Kg of Carbon Dioxide.  That means, during our journey, we would have been responsible for polluting the environment with 162 Kg of carbon di-oxide.  Many vehicles have come to this function.  Imagine how much of carbon di-oxide, all the vehicles might have released to pollute the environment.

World over, all the vehicles put together release more than 36 billion ton carbon di-oxide every year.  That is why, monsoon and the climate  get disturbed a lot.

If human beings want to live happily, every person should plant one tree and protect this.  A grown up tree always absorbs 20 Kg of carbon di-oxide and emits 14 Kg of Oxygen.  If every individual plants one tree, it will become one billion trees.  This one billion trees can protect our environment and keep check on the changing climate.  This will safeguard the future also."

As suggested by Dr Kalam, let us all plant at least one tree in our place, to protect the climate and to safeguard the future.

Jai Hind

[India_Vision_2020] Sabarmati Ashram, the key place where Mahatma Gandhi took historic decisions

dear friends

Today is Gandhi Jayanthi Day.  While, paying homage to him, we should also take some time to remember the place, where he lived for nearly 13 years and drew the plans for freedom movement.

After returning from South Africa, Mahatma Gandhi  set up a Satyagraha Ashram at Kocharab at Ahamedabad on 25th May 1915.  The Ashram was then shifted to the banks of river Sabarmati on 17th June 1917.  At that time, Mahatma said,  "This is the right place for our activities to carry on the search for truth and develop fearlessness, for on one side are the iron bolts of the foreigners, and on the other the thunderbolts of Mother Nature."

As predicted by Mahatma, this place proved to be the most significant place during the freedom struggle.  Many national leaders like Pandit Nehru, Vinobha ji, Sardar Patel, Rajaji have visited this place and took historic decisions.

Mahatma lived in this Ashram till 12th March 1930.  On that day, he started his famous Dandi Salt Satyagraha Yatra from this place with 78 freedom fighters protesting against the tax levied by British rule on Salt.  This Dandi March and the simultaneous march led by Shri Rajaji in the South were important events in ths history of Indian freedom struggle and galvanised the people.  More than 60,000 freedom fighters courted arrest and their properties were seized by the British Government.

Mahatma Gandhi decided to disband the Ashram on 22nd July 1933, as many of the freedom fighters were in Jails.  Thereafter, the local people, took the initiative of preserving the Ashram as monument.  On 10th May 1963, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the Gandhi Museum and it was made as a National monument.  Till date, this historic place is being preserved well, in the original condition, to provide inspiration for the future generation.

When Mahatma left this Ashram on 12th March 1930 for Dandi Yatra, he vowed to return to Ashram only after India's freedom.  Unfortunately, due to partition and communal riots, Mahatma could not even participate in the Independence day celebrations at Delhi.

Since he was assasinated in 1948, he could not visit the Sabarmati Ashram again during his life time.

Sabarmati Ashram is an important place, which provided inspiration to Mahatma Gandhi to plan and initiate the freedom movement.  Every Indian citizen should visit this place atleast once in his life time.

Please watch a brief video (6 minutes) on the Sabarmati Ashram by visiting the following link.
