[India_Vision_2020] Gandhian Sasi Perumal on fast for 28th day against liquor

hi all

In my earlier mail, I wrote about  Gandhian Mr Sasi Perumal who is on fast demanding total prohibition at Chennai.  We wrote about his arrest again on 23rd Feb when he sat on fast.  Later he was taken to Government Hospital and on the next day, he was released by the Police and discharged from the hospital.

He moved to a private place at Mylapore-Chennai and continued his fast.  From 30th Jan 2013, he is on fast and does not take any food excepting water.  In between during his arrest period, police took him to the hospital and gave IV drips.  Til date, he refuses to take any food.  Today (26 Feb 2013) is 28th day of his fasting.

He is on mouna vrita also.   I met him today.  I am told by his villagers, that he is fighting for this cause since 32 years.  He has gone on protest fast several times.  Though, there is not much of a media hype, because he is not a known leader, some of the TV channels have telecast discussion shows on this protest. Some of the pictures taken by me today are available in this link.

I will update further on this.

Subject: A Gandhian arrested again today for protesting against liquor

hi all

Yesterday, I wrote about Mr Sasi Perumal,  Gandhian who was on fast for 24 days in Central Jail protesting against liquor sales.  As I said earlier, he was admitted to Government Hospital at Royapettah and was given IV drips.

Meanwhile, he was released from judicial custody by the Police.  They informed him that somebody had filed a bail petition and got the bail for him.  Mr Sasi Perumal did not want to go on bail.

Today afternoon, he was discharged from the hospital.  After getting discharged from the hospital, he straight went to the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Marina beach, Chennai and started fasting demanding prohibition and stopping liquor sales, which affect the poorer sections of the people.

He started his fast at about 2.30 pm today.   also went to the spot on hearing the news.  At about 3.30 pm, Police officials came to the spot and arrested him again.

I also spoke to his son and some of the people from his village who were there.  They told me that he was determined to go on fast again, even after arrest.  His only demand is to get the Government agree for prohibition.

Please see the pictures taken by me during his fast and during his arrest.

At the time of writing this mail, he has been arrested and taken to the Police station.  I will update further.

Mr Sasi Perumal (57), a Salem based Gandhian Siddha doctor and social worker  is on fast from 30th January 2013, requesting the Government to impose total prohibition in Tamilnadu.

On 30th January, he started his fast under the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Merina beach, with a single demand of total prohibition in the state.  Since he did not take permission from the Police, he was arrested under Section 75 (causing nuisance to public) of Chennai Police Act.

He was remanded to judicial custody on the same day and was taken to Puzhal Central Jail, at Chennai.  He continued his fast even in the prison, demanding the imposition of total prohibition.  Presently, liquor is causing lot of problems to the poorer sections of the society.  Many of the socially conscious people have started demanding the closure of state owned liquor shops, which provide a revenue of nearly 25,000 crores.

Since his health was deteriorating, the jail authorities gave him the IV drips.  His remand was further extended.  For the past 24 days, he is in the judicial custody and continues to be on fast.  Since his health condition further caused anxiety, the jail authorities have admitted him in the Government Hospital at Chennai and now he is being given IV drips.  He continues to be on fast and mauna vrita.  He is determined to get an assurance from the Government.  The authorities are also not in a position to take any decision, due to the sensitivity of the cause.

The local print media have started carrying his story.  One of the leading Tamil channels  is telecasting one hour live discussion show on this subject tonight at prime time.

Even in 2009, he started his protest with a fast.  After 9 days, he dropped the fast after getting an assurance from the Government.  Nothing happened thereafter on the assurance.

As at the time of writing this mail, he is in the judicial custody and admitted to Royapettah Government Hospital.  It is reported that Police is not allowing anybody to meet Mr Sasi Perumal.

I will update further in due course.  Meanwhile, let us pray for his good health.

Shame on the govt

They are ready to kill people who look for reformations in the society but never ready to part with the huge money they collect from selling liquor.

How can we call Gandhi father of the nation when people who protest in his name and follow him are put behind bars....

Gandhi today remains only in the wall of the Govt Organisations along with various other political faces...

dear Mr.Srinivasan

interesting information and well furnished as usual.

U had started the article quoting "April 14th" as Valentines day.

May be the influence of Vsantha Panjami prompted u to have one more Valentines day on our Tamil new Years day too...........

With best wishes and warm regards

(Moderator's Note: The date of Valentines Day was mentined as 14th April instead of 14th February. Regret for the error)

Subject: [India_Vision_2020] How ancient India celebrated Lovers Day? Interesting facts.

hi all

14th April is being observed as Valentines Day in Western Countries.  In the recent years, Indian youngsters also celebrate as Lover's Day.  It has become a fashion to spend the day or night in pubs or night clubs or dinners.  Many times, such celebrations go beyond control causing anxiety to  parents and police officials.

Not withstanding the current happenings, in the early days, the relationship between the lovers and the married people were more gentle and they treated the relationship with more divinity, giving respect for the relationship.    In the ancient India, such celebrations were done for a month, probably to develop more intimacy between the married people.  It was not a showy event then.

In those days, it was celebrated  in the company of our loved ones, adhering to the norms of a civilised society, in a civilized manner.  It is a time for re-establishing the sense of harmony between loved ones and with Nature.

In order to enlighten our readers, I had a detailed discussion with Mr D K Hari, who contributes to our ezine PreSense on 'Ancient Indian Wisdom'.  I reproduce below the note sent by him.  Please read his interesting article.

Srinivasan
Prime Point

February is best suited for Lovers

February is a short sweet month. It is a time when the cold winters have just receded.  A month which is not yet hot.  A transitory month.  A month of spring in some parts of the world. A month where trees, plants and over all nature bloom forth with life after the cold, when they were in hibernation.

This is the month, when nature begins to bloom. In recent times, this month is much awaited for, for the celebration of Lovers' Day, Valentine's Day on February 14th.

Who are Valentines?

Why is this day alone celebrated as Lovers' Day? And what is its connection with Saint Valentine?

There are at least 3 Saint Valentines in the early part of the first millennium.  These three different Saints were all known by the name Valentine or Valentines.

Emperor Claudius of Rome thought that single men made better soldiers than married men with wives and families.

So he outlawed marriages for young men. Saint Valentine defied the decree of Emperor Claudius and got young lovers married, in secret. When this act of Valentine was discovered, he was put to death. This probably could be the reason for linking Saint Valentine to young lovers.

How ancient India celebrated this as Vasantha Utsav?

In all the old cultures of the world, including India, this transitory month between winter and summer, February and March, was earlier celebrated as the Vasantha Utsav month. The Vasantha season was considered fit not only for humans to fall in love this month and marry, even the divinities thought this month fit to marry in.

Thus Rama married Sita, Shiva married Parvathi, and in South India, Kartikeya married Devasena during this period.

It is a season of celestial marriages when nature is more pleasant and conducive for endearing thoughts and deeds. It is in this month that Krishna played with the Gopika.

The Vasantha Utsav, the month long celebration culminates in the Holi festival, festival of colours, festival of joy when people come together;  forgive each other, bond with each other, forgetting the mistakes of the past.

In Punjab it is celebrated as Basant Panchami, also has "Hola Mohalla" festival.

In Rajasthan as "Gajh Shingaar", "Jamboo Holi" and in Bengal as "Nabanna Utsav".  In Goa it is celebrated as "Shigmotsav".

In down south, in Tamil Nadu, from time immemorial, it has been celebrated as "Indira Vizha" or the festival of Indra, for the whole month.

In Tamil Nadu, one of the descendents of the Maratha King, Chatrapati Shivaji, a king by the name Sarfoji Maharaja of Tanjavur, used to visit the Manmada temple, the temple of Cupid (God of love), with his wife everyday of this month and encouraged young lovers to visit the riverside and enjoy the beauty which nature has to offer.

[India_Vision_2020] How ancient India celebrated Lovers Day?
