[India_Vision_2020] A Gandhian arrested again today for protesting against liquor

hi all

Yesterday, I wrote about Mr Sasi Perumal,  Gandhian who was on fast for 24 days in Central Jail protesting against liquor sales.  As I said earlier, he was admitted to Government Hospital at Royapettah and was given IV drips.

Meanwhile, he was released from judicial custody by the Police.  They informed him that somebody had filed a bail petition and got the bail for him.  Mr Sasi Perumal did not want to go on bail.

Today afternoon, he was discharged from the hospital.  After getting discharged from the hospital, he straight went to the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Marina beach, Chennai and started fasting demanding prohibition and stopping liquor sales, which affect the poorer sections of the people.

He started his fast at about 2.30 pm today.   also went to the spot on hearing the news.  At about 3.30 pm, Police officials came to the spot and arrested him again.

I also spoke to his son and some of the people from his village who were there.  They told me that he was determined to go on fast again, even after arrest.  His only demand is to get the Government agree for prohibition.

Please see the pictures taken by me during his fast and during his arrest.

At the time of writing this mail, he has been arrested and taken to the Police station.  I will update further.

Hi all

Mr Sasi Perumal (57), a Salem based Gandhian Siddha doctor and social worker  is on fast from 30th January 2013, requesting the Government to impose total prohibition in Tamilnadu.

On 30th January, he started his fast under the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Merina beach, with a single demand of total prohibition in the state.  Since he did not take permission from the Police, he was arrested under Section 75 (causing nuisance to public) of Chennai Police Act.

He was remanded to judicial custody on the same day and was taken to Puzhal Central Jail, at Chennai.  He continued his fast even in the prison, demanding the imposition of total prohibition.  Presently, liquor is causing lot of problems to the poorer sections of the society.  Many of the socially conscious people have started demanding the closure of state owned liquor shops, which provide a revenue of nearly 25,000 crores.

Since his health was deteriorating, the jail authorities gave him the IV drips.  His remand was further extended.  For the past 24 days, he is in the judicial custody and continues to be on fast.  Since his health condition further caused anxiety, the jail authorities have admitted him in the Government Hospital at Chennai and now he is being given IV drips.  He continues to be on fast and mauna vrita.  He is determined to get an assurance from the Government.  The authorities are also not in a position to take any decision, due to the sensitivity of the cause.

The local print media have started carrying his story.  One of the leading Tamil channels  is telecasting one hour live discussion show on this subject tonight at prime time.

Even in 2009, he started his protest with a fast.  After 9 days, he dropped the fast after getting an assurance from the Government.  Nothing happened thereafter on the assurance.

As at the time of writing this mail, he is in the judicial custody and admitted to Royapettah Government Hospital.  It is reported that Police is not allowing anybody to meet Mr Sasi Perumal.

I will update further in due course.  Meanwhile, let us pray for his good health.

Srinivasan
