Dear friends

Probably, members may recall that we have circulated recently a podcast interview of Dr Santhosh Babu IAS, presently Managing Director of Electronic Corporation of Tamilnadu and formerly District Collector of Krishnagiri District.  We have brought out, how he was able to reduce the child labour and out-of-school children in Krishnagiri district.  This is the link

http://www.poduniversal.com/2008/12/reduction-of-child-labour-and-out-of.html

Now, Ananda Vikatan, a leading Tamil Weekly in their latest edition has featured him as one of the Top 10 achievers  of Tamilnadu.  They have featured him for his contribution at Krishnagiri District.  The Top 10 includes Viswanathan Anand (World Chess Champion), Actor Kamala Hassan (for his Dasavatharam movie), Dr Annadurai (Director of Chandrayan Project) and Dr Anbumani Ramadoss (Union Health Minister for preventing smoking in public places) and others.

Dr Santhosh Babu has volunteered to spend the whole day in our Action 2020 - UnConference organised by our group, along with the youth participants.   We are proud that one of our members has been recognised by a leading magazine in the  Top 10 Achievers.

Dr Santhosh Babu!   Congratulations.  We are proud of you.  We need more such IAS officers like you.

[India_Vision_2020] Caution - Phishing using Google Calendar - Do not pass on id and pass word

dear friends

Today, I received a mail purported to be from customer.awareness.care72@gmail.com.  This mail informed me that the mail was sent from Google customer care and due to congestion in Google mails, they want to verify the password and id.  The mail asked me to write down the id, password, date of birth and the country in the mail itself and click the reply button.  Obviously, the mail would return to the person, who might have sent this.

The mail looks neat and anybody reading this, would be tempted to write the id and pw and click the reply button.  Since I am an ardent user of social media and also associated with Cyber society of India, i made a study of this type of mail.

Google calendar, provides facility for the account holders to invite their contacts for any event.  For example, if there is a New Year meeting on a particular day and time, through this calendar, we can create an Invitation and send to all the people.  Such mails carry in the subject line the world Invitation in paranthesis like this  (Invitation).  That gave me the suspicion and started probing into this.

This is the first time, I am seeing a phishing message using google calendar.  If you have crreated a setting in google calendar to receive the alerts in mobile, you would also get the alert in mobile.

If the said person has sent the invitation to hundreds of people, atleast few would have become victims.  The id and password may be misused.  If the person who sends such messages can also configure, so that the receipient may not know who are the other invitees or receipients of such message.

From the Cyber Society of India, we are also taking up the matter with Google, so that they can plug the loop holes.

Meanwhile, I caution all the members not to pass on the id and password to anybody, based on the emails.  Google or Yahoo never asks for id and pw through e mail.  We can confirm or change the pw only by logging in their official sites.

Action 2020 Core-team is looking at the individual profiles of such organisations and they are directly intimating them furher.

This is the first on-site project of our India Vision Group.

Meanwhile, Big FM, one of the leading FMs in India has become the Radio Partner for this event.  They will be giving live feed from the venue on that day.

Event FAQ (http://www.eventfaqs.com) is also our Event Media Partner.

Few  emient personalities/experts like Mr T S Krishnamoorthy (Former Chief Election Commissioner of India), Mr Santhosh Babu IAS (MD, Elcot), Mr Yachandra Naidu MLC (Hyderabad) and few senior achievers are also particpating to motivate the youngsters.

We have also sent a request to Dr Kalam to depute one of his representatives from his office as an Observer.

Siva, Kalam Nagappan, Natarajan, Poornima, Kartheeban, Veena, Ravi, Jay and Jayashree have formed a core team for making arrangements.

[India_Vision_2020] Foreign funds to Indian NGO's

Saw this in recently. Info says how much India recieves donation from Foreign countries authorised to recieve foreign donations ..

------------------------------------------
Courtesy : Eco Times
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/News_By_Industry/ET_Cetera/Foreign_funds_to_Indian_NGOs_soar_Pak_among_donors/articleshow/3883801.cms

NEW DELHI: Indian non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have not only been getting money from big donors like the US, Germany, the UK,
Switzerland and Italy, but are also receiving contributions from Pakistan. In fact, Islamabad has consistently been donating money to various associations in the last three years.

Although the amount contributed by Pakistan is quite small when compared to that given by the bigwigs, it has put Islamabad in the august list of donors. The contributions by Pakistan and the other big donor countries have gone to NGOs engaged in carrying out cultural, economic, educational, religious or social programmes in different parts of India.

Statistics released by the home ministry regarding 'foreign funds to NGOs' show that India, which has a total of 33,937 registered associations, received Rs 12,289.63 crore in foreign contributions during 2006-07 as against Rs 7,877.57 crore in 2005-06, a substantial increase of nearly Rs 4,400 crore (56%) in just one year.

The US, Germany, the UK, Switzerland and Italy were the top five foreign contributors during 2006-07. These five countries have consistently been the big donors since 2004-05. Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada and France are the other countries which figure prominently in the list of foreign donors.

The US has been the biggest donor to Indian NGOs in the last several years. It contributed over Rs 2,971 crore in 2006-07 alone. As far as Pakistan is concerned, the country contributed Rs 43.28 lakh in 2004-05, Rs 71.70 lakh in 2005-06 and Rs 21.99 lakh in 2006-07.

In response to a query on whether NGOs getting money from outside had been known to divert the funds for illegal work or to spread terror activities, the home ministry, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, said, "There are no specific inputs to indicate misuse of foreign contribution by the registered associations (under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act) for terrorist activities."

The ministry pointed out that no association having a definite cultural, economic, educational, religious or social programme could accept foreign contributions without registration or prior permission under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), 1976. "However, as and when complaints relating to the violation of the provisions of the FCRA against associations come to the notice of the government, appropriate action is taken," it said.

Such activities may include prohibiting the NGOs from receiving foreign contributions, freezing their bank accounts and prosecuting them in a court of law. On the basis of various complaints, as many as 44 NGOs have been prohibited from receiving foreign contributions whereas the bank accounts of 11 others have been frozen. Besides, the cases of 17 organisations have been referred to the CBI for detailed investigation.

Among the states, Tamil Nadu has the distinction of having the highest number of registered associations (3,009) and getting the highest amount of foreign contributions in India. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Gujarat and Rajasthan are the top ten states which received major foreign contributions in 2006-07

[India_Vision_2020] Urgent - Petition to Hon'ble Chief Justice of India for ordering 'None of the above' option in ballot

dear friends

As already circulated in the group, Election Commission of India has submitted their recommendation 5 years back to the Indian Government to include 'None of the above'  option in the ballot papers/ EVMs after listing all the eligible candidates.  Four years back, one Senior Advocate has filed a PIL in the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India praying for direction to the Election Commission/Government of India to direct them to implement this to enable voters to reject bad candidates.  If this recommendation is implemented, political parties would start fielding better candidates.

Since, the General Elections are likely to be announced soon,  India Vsiion Group has made out a petition to Hon'ble Chief Justice of India to take up the case and order the Election Commission to implement this.

If you have not already signed the peition, please go to this link and sign the petition today itself.
http://www.petitiononline.com/elec2009/petition.html

We plan to submit to Hon'ble Chief Justice of India on 1st Jan.  Please sign this immediatley and circulate to your friends and contacts.
