[India_Vision_2020] Children's parliment - Novel idea

Hello All

Just stumbled upon this novel idea of "Children's  Parliment". Could not resist sending the same . Was in Hindu, Dec 21,2007
(http://www.hindu.com/2007/12/22/stories/2007122250370100.htm)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I promise to attend to the needs of the children of my locality," P. Sankareswari said solemnly. This 13-year-old is now the prime minister of the children's parliament for Arul Nagar.

About 110 children swore allegiance to their counterparts in their respective localities at the oath-taking ceremony of a children's parliament on the premises of the Fathima Church here. Hundreds of children between 9 and 16 years in slums and in the rural areas are part of children's parliaments, which have prime ministers, speakers, ministers of home affairs, finance, education, information and communication, health and so on.
Parliament meets once a week with a specific agenda. The meetings take up issues concerning the area, be it civic problems, educational or health matters.
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Mariyala (rehabilitation home for street and working girls) and Don Bosco Anbu Illam have initiated 32 such children's parliaments in various pockets of Coimbatore.
Kandhasamy Nagar did not have a proper facility to conduct evening classes for children, Sister Veda, chief coordinator of the children's Parliament of Mariyalaya, says. "Parliament discussed this in one of its meetings, found a suitable ground that was lying unused and cleaned it up. They built a fence, erected a roof and converted it into an evening study centre," she adds. NGO volunteers do not interfere with the meetings. The decisions are taken entirely by the council of ministers, Sr. Veda says.
Similar parliaments function in 19 districts in Tamil Nadu. Various NGOs have joined hands to initiate them. The ministers are selected by means of an election among children.
"It facilitates a structural change in society," says Father R. Issac, State convener of the children's parliament movement. "It promotes direct democracy apart from enhancing the holistic growth of the children." Each member of parliament is aware of children's rights and is trained to identify violations in their peer group or outside. "It is the best way to eliminate child trafficking," says Fr. Issac.
From the provision of proper roads to waste disposal and drinking water supply, the children's parliament has brought various civic issues to the notice of local bodies. They have submitted petitions to the authorities too.
"By assuming their roles as ministers, they feel responsible for one another and their society. They can build a society that is uncorrupt," asserts Fr. Christopher Jayaraj, Director of the Don Bosco Anbu Illam.

Re: [India_Vision_2020] Regarding Plastic bags

hai..very good tought...and i know the numbers have made me 2 think about it....what i personally feel is that each individual must start taking small 2 steps on their own ...like not throwing these plastic bags outside but 2 dispose them in one garbage box.try encouraging  people to sale  paper bags instead of plastic bags...among us whosoever is a businessmen must increase the production of paper n other easily composable materials...
i really feel we all must start thinkg upon this  and "one persons action can change change the destiny of whole nation"

Hi All,
One of my friends recently was sharing about a community project she had taken up as part of a program she is doing. Her project is about reducing the amount of plastic usage.  I went to buy groceries to the super market the other day and as a thought process wanted to do some maths.  Correct me if you feel it does not reflect the complete picture.

Lets assume each family on an average uses 5 plastic bags(2 thick ones and 3 thin ones) a week to buy groceries,  then in a year it uses 52*5 = 260 plastic bags. Imagine 100 families visit a supermarket every week and there are 100 supermarkets in hyderabad we are using 100*100*260 plastic bags per year ie 26 lakhs of plastic bags in hyderabad alone on a conservative approach. This is not taking into consideration the other reasons for which we use plastic.

I read that the thin plastic bags(here about 5.2lakhs of plastic bags consumption a year) used in grocery shops take 1 million years to decompose and as we all know plastic is a material which does not allow water or anything to seep through. Plastic thrown around will not decompose soon and it will not allow water to seep into the ground below.  And this has an adverse impact on the ground and the ecosystem around.

After looking at the maths I was thinking about what can be done to reduce that. Also I thought I will share this with you all. Maybe the numbers might cause everyone to actually start thinking about where each one of us can play a role in these matters.
Any inputs in this matter I would love to hear.

Cheers
Asha.

Re: [India_Vision_2020]Regarding Plastic bags

My dear friends,
Regarding Platics,I have read your Anti-Plastic Item in India-Vision with avid interest. I am also a supporter of least use of Plastic Bags. Also The 3 "r"s Reduce,re-use, re-cycle" apply to Plastics on a Major Scale. I do carry these bags for re-use as many times as possible till they are completely unfit for further use. The family members, however, feel that only one man doing this is not going to make any dent.

You may be aware of the 1 litre and half-litre Milk Sachets. I and a Group of my Friends  buy used Sachets from Market and try to raise avenue-tree saplings and Plant them Freely. We also distribute Free Saplings to all Tree-Lovers. this scheme can be extended to all (strong)Polythene Bags  as well.

2) There is a Chemical Engineer by name Mrs Alka Zadgaonkar residing in Nagpur. She has invented the process of Manufacturing Crude Oil out of this waste Plastics.  If people can be taught how to convert their waste into Money, they may perhaps happily listen to you and me  and  try to  save Mother Earth. You can visit <www.goodnewsindia.com> for more details of Ms Alka's experiment.

Kindly spread your good thought to as many people on this World Earth Day.

As for me ,I am one who practises Tree-planting in Poly-Bags
(Extract from Web-site")" Let us address some of the questions that are already popping up in your mind. Zadgaonkar's is not a demo -plant running on some government grant or subsidy. They took a commercial loan from the State Bank of India in 2005 and have already begun paying back. In fact, the government let them down and Zadgaonkars decided to flex the great Indian entrepreneurial muscle

The process invented and patented by Alka Zadgaonkar is capable of accepting all tribes and castes of plastic waste as input: carry bags, broken buckets and chairs, PVC pipes, CDs, computer keyboards and other eWaste, the horrible, aluminized crinkly bags of the kind that pack crisps, expanded polystyrene [the abominable 'thermocole'], PET bottles- are these and others are all given equal opportunity to contribute to Zadgaonkars' profits. No sorting or picking is done.

No preparatory cleaning is necessary either, except shredding that helps economic transport of bulky waste. All solids and metal fines settle down in the melting process or are converted to ash.
Chlorinated plastics like PVC are particularly hazardous to burn because they emit dioxins. In the Alka Zadgaonkar process, the entire shredded mixture is melted at a low temperature and led to a de-gasification stage. Here chlorine is led away to harmlessly bubble through water, producing hydrochlorous acid."

This may kindly be given wide publicity so that PLASTIC WASTES could be converted to some useful  substitute in stead of clogging Mother water/ Mother Earth's Lung-space.

Re: [India_Vision_2020]Regarding Plastic bags

Plastic bags are seen as a symbol of a wasteful society as they are
a form of packaging that is often not essential. Nobel Award winner Al Gore in his presentation on changing conditions of environment told a small story of his sister….. although 10 years older to him, he was closely attached to her, his father a farmer was one of the biggest cultivators of tobacco, which was supplied to large cigarette manufacturers. His sister in her late teens took up smoking and died young of lung cancer, shocked by the tragic death of his daughter Al Gore's father simply stopped cultivating tobacco.

The point I am trying to make here is of course, to not take plastic
bags in the first place. If you don't take them, they won't make
them. I always carry a few cloth bags, which are stronger and hold
more than the ridiculous 2-items-double-bagged system they use
today.

At malls n superstores it's really not that hard- even if the
checkout person mechanically shoves the goods you have purchased in
a plastic bag , take it out of the bag and say "No, thanks. I'd
rather not waste a bag." The more people refuse, the less
dumbfounded they will be when it happens. So next time you go
shopping, hold your head up proudly as you refuse a plastic bag. You
may not be in a rubber dinghy chasing a whaling boat or pursuing
ivory poachers, but you have made a contribution to the future of
the planet.

I guess we all should make a contribution toward a better
tomorrow….. Remember collectively we can!

[India_Vision_2020] Plastic Bags

Reducing use of Plastic Bags

Dear friends of vision_2020,

So far I have been a silent reader of the most interesting Mail exchanged between the Members.

We at home in the family use large cotton/jute bags for shopping and say NO to put our purchase in plastics. I know many friends who do the same, but it is a very very small number.

About 70-75 years back when I was a school student news-paper waste was used as a packing material by the shop-keepers. It was customary for many youngsters to make paper-bags of different size and give to shop-keepers and make a small earning for pocket money. At that time news-paper waste and gum were almost free, gum we used to pick-up from Babul trees.

This can be taken-up by some of our group-members as a Project and involve young slum children, who usually work as rag-pickers in many Cities of India.

Re: [India_Vision_2020] Regarding Plastic bags

How can I reduce the usage of plastic bags?

Traditional Grocery Stores:

--Always carry a personal shopping bag ( big shoppers (Jute) a good choice)

Huge Retail Stores:

To start with, I can avoid the Big Plastic bags being used to carry the food items.

  •  Carry a permanent shopping bag (Big Shopper (Jute) a good choice).
  •  The retail store security verifies my shopping bag is empty at the entry.
  •  After billing, the Bill Counter assistant, uses my empty shopping bag, instead of the Big plastic Carry bags.
What if the retail Store do not allow personal Shopping bags inside the Store??
  •  I will leave my shopping in the baggage counter.
  • At the billing counter,  I will ask the billing assistant not to wrap all individual food items using a separate big plastic bag.
  •  After billing, I will take the trolley to the baggage counter, collect my shopping bag and use it instead of the separate big plastic bag.
With this approach, we can prevent about 20%(approx) big plastic bags entering in to this beautiful world.

Is this feasible?
"yes it is feasible, but we need to have an attitude to change"

Any ideas, suggestions, improvements are welcome..

Thanks
Nihilson

Hi All,

Greetings to all, This is actually a world wide problem today. We can plastic in all forms around which is ofcourse the most dangerous danger in our daily life.

Many alternatives are coming up for plastic but none could take its place. Even once in Bihar we saw Mr. Laluu Prasad Yadav, promote clay vessels. Apart from plastic bags we are more today moving for use and throw items like plates and glass and more.

I don't know how can we eliminate it from our lives. But when i tried to see alternatives i saw couple of interesting things about plastic.

I saw couple of research experiments to process and decompse these plastic wastes. In this decomposition they opted to collection of harmful gases and air locked them into barrells. I heard its not too expensive but i don't know the reasons for not being implementation.

the other thing as mentioned they will not let water to be drained into earth. This concept is harmful for our eco system. But this could be helpful for in building more durable roads. We know more roads are being damaged due to rains and water in our country. By using plastic wastes we can develop better roads.

Plastic wastes are powered and mixed to road concrete in this case. So it helps to certain extent to prevent unwanted deposition of plastic wastes all thru and also we will have good roads for longer periods with less maintaineance. we can see couple of roads projects in this respect in the following link

It would be great if we can replace plastic. But it appears a really very big challenging task. Apart from damage to earth it will even result in wide variety of cancers to humaity. It would be great if we can atleast start reducing their usage in our daily lives.

Also i heard that cheap plastic covers (plastic covers in colors like black, blue and red etc) of low quality are very harmful even for daily use. So please avoid them. they are many factors for cancer and other chronic diseases. They are very hard even to decompose than normal transparent plastic covers.

Hope we can take some steps in reducing our usage to protect ourselves and also our ecosystem.

Good Day
