Re: [India_Vision_2020] Regarding Plastic bags

How can I reduce the usage of plastic bags?

Traditional Grocery Stores:

--Always carry a personal shopping bag ( big shoppers (Jute) a good choice)

Huge Retail Stores:

To start with, I can avoid the Big Plastic bags being used to carry the food items.

  •  Carry a permanent shopping bag (Big Shopper (Jute) a good choice).
  •  The retail store security verifies my shopping bag is empty at the entry.
  •  After billing, the Bill Counter assistant, uses my empty shopping bag, instead of the Big plastic Carry bags.
What if the retail Store do not allow personal Shopping bags inside the Store??
  •  I will leave my shopping in the baggage counter.
  • At the billing counter,  I will ask the billing assistant not to wrap all individual food items using a separate big plastic bag.
  •  After billing, I will take the trolley to the baggage counter, collect my shopping bag and use it instead of the separate big plastic bag.
With this approach, we can prevent about 20%(approx) big plastic bags entering in to this beautiful world.

Is this feasible?
"yes it is feasible, but we need to have an attitude to change"

Any ideas, suggestions, improvements are welcome..

Thanks
Nihilson

Hi All,

Greetings to all, This is actually a world wide problem today. We can plastic in all forms around which is ofcourse the most dangerous danger in our daily life.

Many alternatives are coming up for plastic but none could take its place. Even once in Bihar we saw Mr. Laluu Prasad Yadav, promote clay vessels. Apart from plastic bags we are more today moving for use and throw items like plates and glass and more.

I don't know how can we eliminate it from our lives. But when i tried to see alternatives i saw couple of interesting things about plastic.

I saw couple of research experiments to process and decompse these plastic wastes. In this decomposition they opted to collection of harmful gases and air locked them into barrells. I heard its not too expensive but i don't know the reasons for not being implementation.

the other thing as mentioned they will not let water to be drained into earth. This concept is harmful for our eco system. But this could be helpful for in building more durable roads. We know more roads are being damaged due to rains and water in our country. By using plastic wastes we can develop better roads.

Plastic wastes are powered and mixed to road concrete in this case. So it helps to certain extent to prevent unwanted deposition of plastic wastes all thru and also we will have good roads for longer periods with less maintaineance. we can see couple of roads projects in this respect in the following link

It would be great if we can replace plastic. But it appears a really very big challenging task. Apart from damage to earth it will even result in wide variety of cancers to humaity. It would be great if we can atleast start reducing their usage in our daily lives.

Also i heard that cheap plastic covers (plastic covers in colors like black, blue and red etc) of low quality are very harmful even for daily use. So please avoid them. they are many factors for cancer and other chronic diseases. They are very hard even to decompose than normal transparent plastic covers.

Hope we can take some steps in reducing our usage to protect ourselves and also our ecosystem.

Good Day

Hi All,
One of my friends recently was sharing about a community project she had taken up as part of a program she is doing. Her project is about reducing the amount of plastic usage.  I went to buy groceries to the super market the other day and as a thought process wanted to do some maths.  Correct me if you feel it does not reflect the complete picture.

Lets assume each family on an average uses 5 plastic bags(2 thick ones and 3 thin ones) a week to buy groceries,  then in a year it uses 52*5 = 260 plastic bags. Imagine 100 families visit a supermarket every week and there are 100 supermarkets in hyderabad we are using 100*100*260 plastic bags per year ie 26 lakhs of plastic bags in hyderabad alone on a conservative approach. This is not taking into consideration the other reasons for which we use plastic.

I read that the thin plastic bags(here about 5.2lakhs of plastic bags consumption a year) used in grocery shops take 1 million years to decompose and as we all know plastic is a material which does not allow water or anything to seep through. Plastic thrown around will not decompose soon and it will not allow water to seep into the ground below.  And this has an adverse impact on the ground and the ecosystem around.

After looking at the maths I was thinking about what can be done to reduce that. Also I thought I will share this with you all. Maybe the numbers might cause everyone to actually start thinking about where each one of us can play a role in these matters.
Any inputs in this matter I would love to hear.

Cheers
Asha.
