[India_Vision_2020] Do Non Resident Indians involve in Nation building? - An exclusive podcast interview

dear friends

Podcast link
http://www.poduniversal.com/2008/06/do-non-resident-indians-involve-in.html

In the recent years, lot of educated youngsters migrate to United States and Europe for better prospects. There are two type of Non Resident Indians (1) people who are living there even prior to 1991 and (2) people who migrate to foreign countries post 1991.

During 1990 when India was facing acute financial and political crisis, during Prime Minister Chandrasekar's period, gold reserve was pledged to meet the day to day balance of payment. At that time, fearing collapse of Indian economy, many Non Resident Indians repatriated their investments from the Indian Banks to their living country. At that time, it added further financial strain and crisis to India. Rajiv Gandhi assassination lead to further political crisis. During 1991, Narasimha Rao took over as Prime Minister and with the help of Dr Manmohan Singh (then Finance Minister and present Prime Minister) liberated the Indian economy.

Economic liberalisation opened up our economy and lot of opportunities. Indian economy started booming. Lot of educated youngsters started moving to US and Europe for better prospects. Now the young Indians have started building up the Image of the country across the globe. What was considered by developed countries as the 'land of snake charmers and beggars' is now being seen as 'technology savvy country'.

In this background, few questions arise in our mind: (1) What is the attitude of NRIs towards the development of India (2) How far, they will raise to the occasion, if another crisis is faced by India (3) What is the role of NRIs in developing the Nation.

With these questions, we approached Mr Sudarshan Venkatraman, Chairman of Zylog Systems Limited, an Indian Multinational Company for his views. He has been operating the business in many countries. He belongs to the 'post 1991 group of NRI'. He has been taking active interest silently in various social welfare activities, particularly towards education of dalit and downtrodden children.

He is also a member of our group.  You can listen to his views by clikcing the link

Dr.Kalam - Can be Goodwill Ambassador to Govt of India/United Nations Petition

To: Indian Govt
On 1st May,we had an opportunity to participate in a closed programme at Pollachi (near coimbatore, TamilNadu) along with our India Vision Partner groups(indiavision2020.org) .We got chance to listen and interact with Former Indian President Dr Kalam. On our way back we also saw on either side of the road, villagers standing to have a glimpse of 77 year old Dr Abdul Kalam. This is one of our preludes to create this Petition - Dr.Kalam can be made Goodwill Ambassador! Here are few reasons : Still he remains as President in the minds of many people. He is touring the country and abroad out of his passion. This galvanises the entire youth towards National building. Our suggestion is that he can be appointed by the Government of India as "Goodwill Ambassador" of our country for his life time.(Manekshaw was conferred with 'Field Marshal' for his life time in India) Definitley, this will enhance the image of our country across the world.Indian Govt. can make use of his 'charisma' for the advantage of the country. Infact United Nations can think of appointing him as "Goodwill Ambassador" to spread the message of peace across the globe.?After Mahatma Gandhi, only Dr Kalam has been attracting the youth without being in power or position. We request you to sign in the petition to make that happen! Jai hind !!
Sincerely,

Dr.Kalam - Can be Goodwill Ambassador to Govt of India/United Nations Petition

Dear All

Inspiration lies everywhere. All need is to seek it. This is evident from the inspiring

Story of Narashima Rao, a student from Kamman distirct village in Andhra Pradesh!!

One of our friends had fwd'd a NDTV report – (Village labourer cracks IIT)

http://www.ndtv. com/convergence/ ndtv/gentemplate _generic. aspx?template= IIT

Please also see the NDTV report for the same :

http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=lBZgrXRad6s

What was very painful to see was, he is currently working as daily wage labourer

Under National Rural Employment garuntee Scheme(NREGS) . And this guys hold rank : 453 !!!

I personally spoke to the student & seems from very humble background. He has done most of his schooling in native village govt school only. For junior college has done it in Vijayawada through help of native people help.

Help seems to be pouring in for now & even otherwise should not have problem getting bank loan. Final list of group would be out on June 30.

Lets hope this boy makes it to IIT ! We wish him all the very best !

Regards

shiva

Re: [India_Vision_2020] How to select University Courses after 12th std? An interview with VC of Anna University

It is really an excellent idea to remove the doubts from people mind and to avoid the crowd approaching towards the Engineering colleges.

Subject: [India_Vision_2020] How to select University Courses after 12th std? An interview with VC of Anna University

Now this an admission season. The parents of the students who have completed 12th standard are in a confused mood. There is a notion amongst the parents and students that only Engineering Courses in Information Technology are best suited for future prospects. Arts and Science courses are not preferred. Is the hype of IT Engineering courses a 'myth' or 'reality'?

On 22nd June, 2008, we telephonically interviewed Prof. R Radhakrishnan, Vice Chancellor of Anna University, Coimbatore to clarify on these points and to guide the parents and students. Anna University is one of the leading technical Universities in India with more than 100 affiliated engineering colleges. This podcast interview will be useful for the students who are seeking admission in University courses and also pursing various education in different colleges in India.

Prof. Radhakrishnan suggests that a minimum basic degree with computer skills are sufficient to get placement and to develop future. prospects.  He even goes to suggest that students with 10th standard qualification can also learn the skills that are needed by the industry and can go for jobs. Then they can earn more qualifications through distance education. He also says that students should improve the English language communication skills.

Prof. Radhakrishnan suggests that after completing the Schooling, the students should (1) self evaluate themselves and find out their interest with the help of their parents and teachers and (2) identify the field of education, based on the interest.

Please listen to the interesting and useful podcast in the following link.  I am releasing this in the group, so that you can pass on to the students who are seeking college admissions.

[India_Vision_2020] Unsung Heroes - Young Helping Minds

Please listen to the podcast interview at
http://www.poduniversal.com/2008/06/unsung-heroes-young-helping-minds.html

Young Helping Minds

Many times, the elders blame the younger generation including students for their behaviour and changes they bring about. But seldom we recognise them for their silent contribution to the society.

Nagappan, Sathiyan and a dozen young students used to celebrate their birth day parties in hotels and enjoy the dinner. Suddenly four years back, Nagappan and his friends decided not to spend lavishly the money for their birthdays in the hotels and instead pool the money to help poor students. A physically disabled junior student hailing from a very poor family was the first beneficiary of their gesture. They paid his college fees.

The smile on the face of the poor disabled boy motivated Nagappan and others to mobilise more number of students, who can contribute around 20 to 25 rupees every month. All the amount so collected were pooled for supporting more such poor and disabled students for their education., by way of fees, books, etc.

The encouragement given by the fellow students made Nagappan and Sathiyan to form a trust in the name of 'Young Helping Minds' and they registered the trust deed with authorities and also with Income Tax Department. They have around 250 students / young people contributing their small share towards the noble cause of educating the poor and disabled children. Presently, they support 35 such students for their education.

Inspired by Dr Abdul Kalam, Nagappan also changed his name as 'Kalam' Nagappan. They want to increase the contributors to 1000 and to increase the beneficiaries to 100 by 2010. Nagappan, Sathiyan, Poornima and Ponmudi, the trustees of this Young Helping Minds met me last Sunday.

I asked them : "Now you are all students. You are happily involving yourself in the social activities. Some of you have completed and now working in companies. What would happen if you all get married and enter the family life?" Without hesitation or even blinking of the eye, they responded together, "We will look only for like minded partners".

When they sought an appointment with me to meet, I was happy that i was going to motivate them further. Finally, after having had three hours of discussion, I ended up in getting myself motivated by these young boys and girls. I saw them off from my office with all hope that India's future is in the safe hands.

They can be contacted at younghelpingminds@yahoo.co.in
Their website www.younghelpingminds.org

I also recorded their interview in podcast. Please listen to their interview at

Re: [India_Vision_2020] Krishnagiri offers a new lifeline to dropouts

Dear All,

Thanks Shiva for this mail. I was fortunate to see the whole operation in action when I went to Krishnagiri (to initiate a Public Private partnership by NASSCOM for Rural BPO projects) which keeps track of all the students attending school. The Collector explained how the volunters go to the child's house when he does not turn up to school. To ensure that the students come regularly, all the basic needs of the family are first met and students attend a transit school first before they slowly enter the mainstream education. It is indeed a good model to follow. Constant monitoring and tracking ensures the success of this project.

Krishnagiri, declared as one of the most backward districts in Tamil Nadu, is in fact setting a shining example in another area too - Rural BPO. Below is a link on the latest partnership of Fostera with Fostera, a rural BPO organisation promoted by the District Administration of Tamil Nadu with Adventity.

http://www.bpotimes.com/efytimes/fullnewsbpo.asp?edid=27061

Monday, June 16, 2008:  Adventity has partnered with Fostera, a rural BPO organisation promoted by the District Administration of Tamil Nadu, to set up a rural BPO in Krishnagiri. Fostera will provide the infrastructure for the new facility, whereas Adventity will provide end-to-end training of the resources for the pilot batch of hires. Adventity will provide work related to voice and non-voice operations to be executed by Fostera.
The new centre is expected to carry out data conversion activities and is expected to employ around 100 people initially. The company is also looking at setting similar centres in other 'B' class cities in India in the long run.

Kumar Subramanian, chief executive officer, Adventity, said, "Our partnership with Fostera will provide us with access to talent and infrastructure in semi-urban areas like Krishnagiri and many more such regions in India. This region remains fairly untapped and gives us an opportunity to provide employment to the youth of Tamil Nadu. We are delighted to have been chosen by Fostera to launch this BPO unit."

Krishnagiri offers a new lifeline to dropouts

Te Narasimhan / Chennai June 18, 2008, 2:18 IST

http://ngopost. org/story. php?title= Krishnagiri_ offers_a_ new_lifeline_ to_dropouts

Krishnagiri district in Tamil Nadu is setting an example in tackling primary school dropouts. With the help of technology and nearly 10,000 volunteers, the district is getting the dropouts back to school. Using software aptly named, back2school, developed by Chennai-based Arbiter, the district administration monitors each schoolgoing child daily. And the results are showing: 8,000 of the 8,867 school dropouts are back in school.

The project is the brainchild Krishnagiri' s district collector Santhosh Babu. Every time, a school reports a child abstaining for even a day, a reminder pops up on Babu's computer.  Immediately, the root of the problem, which is usually family debt forcing children to work, is analysed and sorted out so that nothing comes between the children and their education.

A major success story is in Undiyalnatham, a remote village from where 25 children missed classes for a good part of the year. On enquiry, it was found that these children belonging to the Irular tribe worked as 'watchmen' in Andhra Pradesh, which has been their livelihood for generations. These 25 children, the first generation of their tribe to get formal education, are now back in school.

The method is simple. Every time a child is absent, the class teacher reports it to the headmaster, who in turn reports this to a volunteer, who then updates the collector's office through a computer in the local panchayat. This is how Babu gets the alert on his computer.

Representatives of the NGO Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and the Unicef then solve the specific problems, which sometimes involve clearing family debt. The money comes from the district administration. The effort involves a 10,000-Village Volunteer Force (VVF) consisting of child volunteers, panchayat presidents and headmasters of the 1,700-odd schools in the district.

"The VVF members will keep going around the villages and collect data about students missing from the classroom. The volunteer is picked from the same village so that she is familiar with the child's history," Babu said.  He hopes to achieve 100 per cent attendance by the year-end. The objective is to ensure that every child in the district passes at least the 10th so that s/he will be ready to work in rural BPO centres.
