dear friends
Republic Day Greetings to all the members.
As you all know, this India Vision online group has an offline wing known as Action 2020 Team with 30 youth organisations as constituents. This team is backed by nearly 10,000 young working professionals and students. They have been doing silent works to realise the Vision 2020 in the areaas like primary education in rural areas, environment, rehabilitation of stree children, etc.
Every six months, the leaders of these member organisations meet and review their performance and chalk out the joint programmes. This meeting is called 'UnConference'. The first of such UnConference was held at Chennai in Jan 2009. Dr Abdul Kalam launched this UnConference through mobile from Delhi.
Education Loan Task Force (ELTF) is one of the successful activities of this Action 2020 team. After the formation of ELTF, we were able to create awareness among the students and parents on the edu loan scheme. Wherever, poor and brilliant students are harassed by the banks, we have taken up at higher level and resolved the problems. We have written about ELTF several times in this group.
So far, the member organisations have undertaken hundres of small small projects, touching more than 2 lakh beneficiaries. Till date, we have confined this Action 2020 only within southern states like Tamilnadu, Andhra and Karnataka.
5th UnConference of Action 2020 was held at Chennai on Sunday the 23rd Jan 2011 to review the performance and to plan for the future.
In the 5th UnConference, we also honoured State Bank of India and Indian Bank for their top performance under Education loan (1) maximum disbursement and outstanding and (2) redressal of education loan grievances promptly. Mr Rajasekar, one of the mentors of Action 2020 and son of late Shri C Subramanian, the architect of Indian Green Revolution and former Union Minister and Mr S S Ramasubbu MP, one of the top 5 performing MPs of 15th Lok Sabha were present and presented the awards on behalf of Action 2020.
During the UnConference, we also gave some suggestions like (1) creation of Credit Guarantee Fund, (2) Involving private banks in the education loan disbursements, (3) making interest subsidy scheme available for other poor diploma courses, and few more. Mr Ramasubbu MP assured us that he would meet the Finance Minister personally and take it forward. Earlier also, he has been supporting ELTF by taking up issues of education loan in the Lok Sabha.
On behalf of India Vision Group and Action 2020 team, we have been insisting that education loan component by public sector banks should go up from the existing level of 1.4% of total advances to a minimum of 7%, so that many poor and brilliant students get the opportunity for higher education. This is one of the important steps to make our Vision 2020 into reality.
