dear friendsIndia Vision online Group and Action 2020 Team will partner with Chennai Police in their initiatives to develop Kannagi Nagar, the largest 'resettlement colony' in South Asia.Around 35,000 people live in this locality. Another 15,000 will be added shortly. The entire population is on account of the resettled families from the City slums, and also the tsunami victims. Slum Clearance Board constructed houses for them and shifted all the city slum dwellers to this locality. In this process, many of the criminals have also been pooled in this area.Kannagi Nagar is presently a notorious area for many of the criminal activities. The criminals may be very few, who are shifted in the process to this locality. Besides, reducing the crime rate in this locality, preventing young children and boys from pursuing criminal activities is a challenging job not only for the Government and Police, but also for the civil society. This resettlement colony is in the midst of the IT corridor. As you know, Chennai is emerging as one of the biggest IT hubs in India. This colony with huge population, though notorious now, is also a great reservoir of human resources.Realising the urgent importance of sensitising this area, Chennai Police has taken up a new commendable initiative to improve the development projects and to help the children and school drop outs to pursue their education and to motivate them to take up normal civil life.Mr Shakeel Akthar IPS, Additional Commissioner of Police, Chennai (he is also the member of our India Vision group) invited Action 2020 team and Rotary Club for a discussion on 26th Feb 2011. Please see the report in The Hindu in the following link:Shiva, Convenor of Action 2020 team came all the way from Bangalore. Mr Muthuraman of Suyam , Mr Natarajan of Dream India, Mr Vinod of Ashreya, Mythili of NEST and myself attended the meeting convened by the Addl. Commissioner of Police. Senior officials from Rotary Club also participated. Some of our Action 2020 team are already experienced in handling street children, child labour, etc. They have also managed challenging situations from criminals. On behalf of India Vision online group and Action 2020 team, we have assured the Police Commissioner that we will also contribute like a 'squirrel' in their initiative. If any of our India Vision Group NGOs who have similar experience in other parts of the country may kindly share your experience with us. If any other NGOs, who are willing to get associated with this project, may also write to us immediately to my e mail id prpoint@gmail.com.I am endorsing a copy to other communication groups also. The Corporates who are interested to get associated with this project as part of their CSR, may also get in touch with me immediately.I have heard that some of the Police officials have undertaken similar development projects elsewhere too. But they are all small areas with limited population. This Kannagi Nagar Project is the biggest one, which needs the support of the civil society in a large scale.Police will monitor and take care of the people with criminal background. But we are more concerned and worried about thousands of young children, boys and girls, who need to be given proper guidance not to resort to illegal and unwanted life. This is where NGOs, Corporates and Civil Society have greater role to play.SrinivasanPrime Point91766 50273
