Interview with Mr Hansraj in Vadapalani Times

Mr.Hansraj Gangaram Ahir is the top performing MP in the current  lok sabha. He has raised 927 questions in the 15th lok sabha and has even had the priviledge of being called the 'most well behaved MP' from former speaker Somnath Chatterjee inspite of different party affliations. Vadapalani times catches up with Hansraj…

Irrespective of several commotions in the parliament how do you ensure that your voice is heard?

The people in the parliament will not protest as long as I don't disrupt their policy and I make sure I don't disrupt their policy. Even if I have only one or two questions or points, I start off such that the first words of mine grasp the attention of the people and then I will be able to emphasize on my points. Also, I try to express my views clearly in short but strongly.

Do you ask questions based on issues pertaining only to your constitution or are the questions of national interest too?

80% of the questions that I pose are of national interest. Only 20 or 25% of the questions pertain to my constituency.

How do you spend your MP fund? How have you used this fund to develop your constituency?

In my constituency there are nearly 2000 villages and the MP fund of 2 crore is highly insufficient. I cannot even spend 1 lakh on each village. Even then, I have organised these funds so as to develop the rural roads, to improve the quality of drinking water, repai old school buildings, develop a gymnasium for the youth and have provided computers to schools to enable the children to gain practical knowledge.

What is your opinion on youngsters entering politics?

It is a healthy trend that many youngsters are taking to politics to work for the welfare of the nation. But they have to remember that there are many experienced politicians like Mahatma Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and others. The youngsters have to take them as role models and set their goals to develop India.

Is it because of the youngsters that there is unruly behaviour in the parliament? Is young blood the cause of commotion and the uproar?

Not all the youngsters are unruly. In many of the cases it is the senior leaders who stir the youngsters to represent issues and raise their voices as the senior leaders cannot raise their own voices.

Recently home minister P.Chidambaram had asked the support of the MPs in naxal infested areas to curb naxalism. How do you think that MPs like you can make your contribution?

Though my constituency is not naxal infested, my neighbourhood constituency is naxal infested. There is not much that we MPs can do. It is not possible for us to hold guns and fight. The only advantage is that since we are closer, contact can be made easy. We give them suggestions and advise them to give up violence. That is all that we can do as MPs.
