National Election watch, an initiative by ADR (who were responsible for getting the Supreme Court orders forcing the candidates to file the affidavit from 2004 General Elections) have analysed the affidavits filed by all the candidates. They have been publishing their results before every phase of election. Now, they have given consolidated highlight of their findings. Please read the interesting Highlights.

Highlights for Phase 1,2,3,4 & 5 combined:
· Total contesting candidates are 8070 out of which NEW has analysed 7405 affidavits. The contesting candidates in 2004 were 5435, which shows a 48.5% increase in contesting candidates.
· Total parties contesting elections in 2009 are 369, which compares to 215 parties in 2004, showing a 71% increase in contesting parties.
· Total no. of Candidates with Criminal Records is 1114 which is about 15.1% of contesting candidates. In 2004 there were more than 24% such candidates.
· Most of the major political parties have fielded candidates with criminal records, with main parties being INC (114), BJP (113), BSP (105), SP (55), CPM (20) & CPI (7). The details of all other parties are attached.
· There are 1379 charges of heinous nature on the candidates which includes, murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, extortion, etc.
· There are 499 candidates charged with heinous crimes. Out of these INC & BSP has 43 each, BJP is next with 41 and SP has 33 candidates charged with such crimes. The details of all other parties are attached.
· There are 188 Red Alert constituencies where 3 or more contesting candidates have criminal background. UP has 40 such constituencies followed by Bihar with 33 such constituencies. The details of all other states are attached.
· '1205'candidates are crorepatis in phase 1,2,3,4 & 5 elections. INC has 261, BJP has 177, BSP has 147 and SP has 63 crorepati candidates. The details of all other parties are given at the back.
· Percentages of crorepatis have increased from 9% in 2004 to 16.3% in 2009.
· 61.6% of candidates (4562 of 7405) have not furnished their PAN card details.
· There are 4 candidates who have declared assets more than 500 Crores. The maximum declared assets are of Mohanraj J., Chennai South(Tamil Nadu) at 1977 Crores. The list of top 50 wealthiest candidates is attached.
· There are 223 candidates who have shown '0' assets. The entire list is attached with this report.
· The average asset of candidates for 62 parties (out of 369) is more than one crore Rs. The list is attached.
· Among major parties, the average asset per candidate for INC is Rs.7 crores, BSP is Rs 3 crores, BJP & SP are Rs. 2 crores each, CPM is Rs 33 lacs & CPI is Rs. 26 lacs. The entire list is attached with this report.
· More than 43.9% candidates (3245 of 7405) are graduates & above.
