[India_Vision_2020] Begging children - a view from Suyam Charitable Trust

Dear All,

I'm constantly reading the amount of informations shared and services
offered and awareness created towards begging children.

Hope you all aware that Suyam (www.suyam.org) running a free school
for street children and begging children under Siragu Montessori
School (www.siragu.org). In the year 1999, 50 families living on the
platform of Kilpauk area were met by Suyam team and started a school
for them in the year 2003 at Palavedupettai Village (12km from Avadi
railway station) and at present we have 352 children and around 70
children were rehabilitated from begging and peacefully studying in
Siragu. Drop out percentage is 2%.

We can't say that we stopped begging 100% but during week end holidays
and festival season, do some children (day scholars) go with their
parents to sell yellow cloth, wipers, toys and other materials in the
signals.

We always want to work with action oriented plan and did our best in
rescuing begging children in the city.

If anyone come across any child begging on the street, try to find
some time to locate their whereabouts and motivate their parents to
educate them and bring them directly to Siragu and Siragu always open
to accommodate them.

There are millions of children are living on streets across the Globe

Unless and until we create alternative and sustainable income source
for them, they won't give up the begging activity. On our motivation,
many youngsters in the community learnt driving an auto and asking for
some support to pay the down payment, someone asking for 4 wheeler
push cart and some one ask something else. For everything, money is
paying a key role. We created opportunities but struggling to support
financially for alternative income source but we are trying our best
to deliver the best.

We targeted on 50 families having begging background and we came to
know there are 50000 families involved in begging only in TamilNadu
(we are sure about the figures but it may or may not be).

Friends, do plan for a meet in Chennai, let us discuss more in person
and do take some concrete steps and together we can work for a common
cause.

thanks and regards.
