Tea seller dreams Kalam
Chennai, Aug 1:
Politicians might have considered A. P. J. Abdul Kalam 'useless' for a second term in Rashtrapati Bhavan but a tea-seller in Chennai says he is inspired by the former President's 'Vision 2020' and is building a smaller replica to uplift his Kodambakkam neighbourhood.
M. A. Balasubramaniam, 59, owns a small teashop in Sivan Colony of Kodambakkam and has been a Kalam fan ever since the missile scientist propounded his 'Vision 2020' in his new avatar as President, as the means to develop India as a world superpower by year 2020 through improved economy and eradication of hunger and poverty. "I have at least 1000 members in the various service groups that I have formed over the last ten years, such as 'Nallor-Vattam' (group of good people), 'Third Sakthi' and 'Adhiradi Sevai', under a development project that we call 'Kodambakkam-
K2020, for instance, held a kolam competition in which almost all the residents participated. At the prize-distribution function, Balu explained that the main aim of the competition was to protect the environment through the year. "Since then, Sivan Colony has been very clean," said K. Venkatesan, a K2020 activist and a MNC executive, stressing that the group sees Balu as a community leader and not just a tea-seller.
Around 100 young men and women in 'Adhiradi Sevai' clean up the streets, plant saplings and undertake periodical camps for blood donation, besides maintaining a roaster for organ donations. If all the five streets of Bharathieswarar Colony have turned so beautifully green, the credit goes to this student force. "This group has steadily grown through these last three years," Balu said.
And there is Maanikka Maanavargal (precious students) who help poor students in their studies and Nambikkai Nangaiyargal (women of confidence) encouraging women's enterprise. Also, K2020 volunteers collect a rupee from each family every month to build a corpus that takes care of old people and orphaned children.
