[India_Vision_2020] Chennai's 370th birth day - From small fishermen village to a buzzling city

Hi all

Today is the formal 370th birth day of Chennai.

On 22 August 1639, Francis Day of the British East India Company bought a small strip of land on the Coromandel Coast from the Vijayanagara King, Peda Venkata Raya in Chandragiri. The region was ruled by Damerla Venkatapathy, the Nayak of Vandavasi. He granted the British permission to build a factory and warehouse for their trading enterprises. A year later, the British built Fort St George, which became the nucleus of the growing colonial city. Fort St.George houses the Tamil Nadu Assembly and other Government offices today.

Originally, this new township was called Chennapattinam. Some more areas were called Madraspattinam.  Later, the City was known as Madras.  Madras became the gateway for the entry of Britishers in India. The City gained lot of importance as the capital of Madras Presidency.   In 1996, Madras was renamed as 'Chennai'.

After nearly 50 years of entry, on 29th Sep 1688, Britishers inaugurated  the 'Corporation of Madras' as a local government, under Royal Charter.  The first  'Worshipful Mayor Aldermen' took oath on that day.  The Corporation of Madras is the oldest in India, indeed in any part of the Commonwealth outside the U.K. Chennai takes pride in that.

Incidentally, the seeds for Indian National Congress and also the freedom movement were sown in the same City.

The influence of British education still remains here.  When two Malayalees, Telugus, Marathis, Rajasthanis, Bengalis meet, they will speak in their own mother tongue.  But you can observe when two educated Tamils meet, they will not speak in Tamil, but will speak only  in English. :)
