[India_Vision_2020] Re: we can be socially responsible by going vegetarian

Dear Group,
saurabh jain has rightly pointed the non-veg lifestyle as one important reason of the impending food crisis.
But apart from this, Veg food are by -default good for out health. Just remember the concept 'BIOMAGNIFICATION'. It tells us that the higher the'level'of the food source in the  food chain, the greater(i.e.magnified) will be the concentration of the contaminants (pesticides, heavy metals e.t.c) in our body. So, in this polluted world, logically its better to take food from the lowest topic level (i.e, producers or plants) and thus keep the level of these contaminants(pesticides, heavy metals e.t.c) to minimum in our own body; thus allowing us a troublefree longlasting healthy body.
Apart from this, another factor is that physiology of animals are similar. So, hormones from the animal we are consuming can disrupt our own hormonal balance. Actually this is the root cause of many diseases we had rerely experienced few genarations ago.
Moreover, there is always possibility of transfer of pathogens from the animal to human. Bird flu and mad cow disease are well known examples but tubrerculisis is often transfered in this way.

We seem to ignore that animal food takes up far more resources than plant food. If we recollect the concept of food chains existing in nature, we would know that the efficiency of energy transfer from one species to another is only 10%. That means animals we eat retain only 10% of what they eat, rest of the energy is consumed in daily activities like movements, digestion etc. So, if the land that is currently being used for raising food for animals is directly put to use for cultivating food grains meant for humans, food crisis is history.

Looking at the above fact, the first step to become socially responsible should be to go vegetarian. And I have touched upon only economic aspect of changing food-habit. Morally, we will be more satisfied that no animal has suffered just to fulfill our appetite. Its medically proven, non- vegeterian people are more prone to various diseases such as heart disorders, osteoporosis, high blood pressure etc. Moreover, we will live by loving and respecting not only humans but also other species.
