Re: [India_Vision_2020] we can be socially responsible by going vegetarian

Hi All,

Mr. Jayatheerthan and Mr. Narendra point is true fact which we all know but how many people do take that into consideration?

SAVE is the vital word in our lives. We are now on the edge due to our exploitation for nature creation. We must atleast learn the value of SAVE. SAVE POWER, SAVE ENERGY, SAVE FOOD, SAVE WATER, SAVE RESOURCES.....

Itz a very long list. It goes on and on. We must add SAVE into our lives to last our (Mankind) existence on this earth. We are trying to create replacement for everything artficially. But this artficial replacements can let humanity (natural creation) to survive on its base?

I wish children get this importance right from start. Its easy to adopt at younger ages. They could be example for others around us (even elder can see point in them). Letz save ourselves by saving all our resources.

Hope and wish we all take steps ahead in implementing this and be an example for others around us. Let all the children also learn this right from the start.

Have a great time.

Well said, Mr.Narenda !

Not wasting food is very important to avoid food crisis situations at present as well as in the future.

Also, even after taking the measures that Mr.Narendra has listed in his mail, if at all we encounter excess food situation while eating out at a restaurant / at a party, we can always pack them and give it to the needy instead of 'dumping' them into the dustbin.

Let's feed human beings and animals -- not microbes :-)

Hello, Vegetarianism vs non vegetarianism debate is a long drawn out one and may not immediately help us to tide over the present food crisis.
We need to think of some immediate and practical steps which every member of this group can take.
May I suggest for adoption a personal charter in this crisis?
Do not waste food.Saving on every occasion is improtant
During festivals,observe austerity,not feast
Austerity during family events like marriages;limit guests;avoid tendency to show hospitality by pouring food on to plates
Limit visits to restaurants;during  such visits, take time off to  talk to restaurant managers on food wastage;individually we can all prepare pamphlets on facts about the food  crisis and distribute to a few in such places; All blogs, e-newsletters,podcasts,group common can have a common slogan"Food is short;Lets not waste'
"If we dont hoard food , every one will have enough', "Lets not create food shortage by hoarding',
'If we buy less food, prices would fall'
'Cook enough to eat,not waste'

Facts about Food shortage
Per head availability of food articles is going down.
Climate change and diversion of land from food to cash crops reduced food production.

Millions of  Indians-children,women,old persons-donot have  money to buy food.High food  prices making people in villagers to eat   by rotation so that one member of family can be fit to earn wages for the family.
Government cannot import food as there is shortage everywhere
It is  not a short term but long term problem
One person's  wasted food is another persons survival meal.

Hello,

Recently there have been lots of news about potential food crisis in US. While so many reasons are being cited, one thing that no one puts is our non-vegetarian food habits. We seem to ignore that animal food takes up far more resources than plant food. If we recollect the concept of food chains existing in nature, we would know that the efficiency of energy transfer from one species to another is only 10%. That means animals we eat retain only 10% of what they eat, rest of the energy is consumed in daily activities like movements, digestion etc. So, if the land that is currently being used for raising food for animals is directly put to use for cultivating food grains meant for humans, food crisis is history.

Infact most of us have an inner urge to be socially responsible. And in different ways we try to contribute something to the society. Looking at the above fact, the first step to become socially responsible should be to go vegetarian. And I have touched upon only economic aspect of changing food-habit. Morally, we will be more satisfied that no animal has suffered just to fulfill our appetite. Its medically proven, non- vegeterian people are more prone to various diseases such as heart disorders, osteoporosis, high blood pressure etc. Moreover, we will live by loving and respecting not only humans but also other species.

So, its my earnest request contemplating more on this issue. Please reply me if there is any discrepency over the points I have put above.

Finally, I would only say, that we can still live a healthy life by avoiding non-vegetarian food.
