Address and interaction with the Students during the Annual Convocation of Indian Institute of Packaging, Mumbai
Conclusion |
On 15 October 2008, I had visited Iledu Village in Tamilnadu where National Agro Foundation has been working on improving the agricultural productivity of the village and also simultaneously finding out non-farm avenues of value added work to the rural community.
They had created a linkage between the rural women and garment export company operating from Chennai. The design and raw material is provided to the workers at Iledu and finished products are sent to Chennai for export.
This brings out the need for export quality packaging for the product. Ideally, it will be useful to execute final packaging at the rural level itself which will enhance the income potential of rural citizens and prevent migration to the cities.
I would request the students and faculty members of IIP to come up with innovative solutions for such rural employment schemes. This will require creative leadership among the packaging industry professionals and the rural citizens. Creative leadership means exercising the vision to change the traditional role from the commander to the coach, manager to mentor, from director to delegator and from one who demands respect to one who facilitates self-respect. I am sure, IIP will be generating such creative leaders who will be participating in national development missions. http://www.abdulkalam.com/kalam/jsp/display_content.jsp?menuid=28&menuname=Speeches%20/%20Lectures&linkid=68&linkname=Recent&content=989&columnno=0&starts=0&menu_image=7 |
