Towards 'Vision 2020'

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Hundreds of young leaders, including students representing 35
youth organisations, participated and shared their views at the
unconference 'Action2020' here on Saturday as part of their effort to
realise the vision 2020 of former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.

Addressing the gathering of youths telephonically, Mr. Kalam said
youth can bring sustainable development in the country.

"Our focus will be on basic education, healthcare and rural
development," said Siva Narayanan, one of the coordinators of the
India Vision 2020 group.

"The 35 organisations supported by around 10,000 young professionals
and students are engaged in 500 projects in education and rural
development," he added.

Final year engineering student R. M. Nagappan, one of the coordinators
of an organisation 'Young Helping Minds,' said their organisation
would start a school for rag-pickers and work towards improving the
spirit of entrepreneurship among youths. The organisation was
supporting students of the weaker sections of the society by providing
financial help. All the other organisations like 'Young Helping Minds'
also undertake projects with a higher degree of social obligation.

India Vision 2020 group was started in 2003 under the guidance of Y.
S. Rajan, co-author of the book 'India 2020', with the aim of bringing
together the socially conscious youth for realising Vision 2020.

The group is one of the largest online groups with around 2300 members
focusing on the strategy for developing the nation.

R.Natarajan, an IT professional who is one of the members, said the
objective of the unconference was to provide a common platform for
service organisations of college students and young professionals for
national development. The focus will be on activity and not mere
discussion, he said.

This initiative will enable partnership between various social
organisations with a long term goal of having sustainable working
models. The membership is voluntary and youths can contact
www.indiavision2020.org and www.action2020.co.cc for participation,
said a press release issued at the unconference.
