Hi friends, I would like to add my views also. The survey is more than 100% true in our experience with few Govt. schools in virudunagar dt and Madurai district. As prabhu said ABL is a new method introduced some 4 years back in Govt. schools of Tamilnade step by step. It is creating some drastic improvement in the education quality and the students interest in coming to schools. The only drawback is there is no sufficient teacher for handling the ABL. The awarness and the materials are not upto the mark. Still it will take few more years to reach. With our (Blossom) educational project- QUEST, we are working in few governement schools for improving the very basic English reading and arithmetic calculations. Hope we will get some positive results in few months. We planend to appoint few additional staffs to these schools to get the flow faster. Sure we will share the things once we can see some positive progress. And on the positive side ...nowadays we can see some serious initiatives by SSA and Tamilnadu Educational minister on improving the Govt schools. And on the other positive side the Head masters of the Govt schools are very helpful and interested in improving the students education quality. They gives us complete freedom to work with them. Lets hope for the best and let us bring the changes along with the govt. Sathish,

The Problem: A survey to assess the current Status of Education (ASER 2006) was conducted in 28 states in India in the months of October and November. One of the key findings of this survey was that in Std V, 47% children could not even read a Std II text fluently. Specifically, - In Std I, 38.2% cannot read alphabets and 53.7% cannot identify numbers
- In Std II, 76.7% cannot read Std I text, and 75.0% cannot do subtraction

ASER 2006 indicates that half of all children in the country start lagging behind in Std I and continue to lag behind in the achievement of expected competencies in Std III, and Std V.
The Solution Pratham has launched the Read India campaign aimed at achieving reading and arithmetic proficiency for all children in the country within and outside the school system. The focus will be on: - Std I-II : alphabets/words and numbers/place value level
- Std III-V: fluent reading, writing and solving arithmetic problems.
Higher standards are not excluded, but will not be the primary focus.
