Kudos to Government of India to set up National Authority for Unique
Identify (UID), under the Planning Commission, to create unique ID
number to all citizens and issue Biometric Smart Card (BSC) to all
citizens from birth to death, aimed at establishing citizenship,
reducing identity related frauds, addressing security issues and
preventing leakages in different government schemes. This is a most
welcome and laudable step in the right direction.
It is told that UID is expected to serve as the basis for many e-
governance services incorporating on-line verification of a person's
identity. In addition, it would enable government to ensure that
benefits under various welfare programmes reach the intended
beneficiaries.
Towards this, the BSC must be made as a single multi purpose card
covering all activities, linked to a single money account in a bank /
post office as a Debit Card, to validate all credit and debit
transactions. This alone can empower the marginalized and voiceless poor
and plug the frauds and lekages in the system.
