[India_Vision_2020] [DR.KALAM NEWS] Caring Kalam

Caring Kalam

Within minutes of the Saras accident news being flashed across the television screens, former President A P J Abdul Kalam called up Samir Kumar Brahmachari, director-general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), with an unusual request.

Kalam wanted to visit Bangalore next day to stand by the scientists at the National Aeronautical Laboratories and express his sympathies with the families of three Indian Air Force pilots who died in the crash.

The former President had a soft corner for the Saras programme because of his works in its earlier avatars and wanted to be with the NAL researchers, who are under fire because of the accident.

Brahmachari, however, had to politely say "no" to Kalam, as arranging a tour by a former President necessitates protocol problems adding to the burden of the local police and civil administration.

It was finally decided that the department of science and technology secretary T Ramasami will accompany Brahmachari.
