We have just formed a group for Tamil Nadu Election Watch - an apolitical group formed under the banner of the National Election Watch to educate the public on their rights and duties towards our democracy and also to create an informed electorate to create transparency and accountability in electing our representatives to the parliament.
You are invited to join in and contribute towards creating an informed citizenry. You are most welcome to invite your other contacts who may be interested to join in and contribute.
What you should know as a citizen and as a voter:
* If you are above 18, you have a right and duty to vote.
* Demand a Voter ID and get it. Submit proof of residence, age and 2 photographs.
* Fill up Form 6 "Application for inclusion of name in electoral roll" to The Electoral Registration Officer of your Assembly / Parliamentary Constituency
* Ask the political parties to declare the credentials of the candidates and why they have been fielded and how they would improve the lives of the citizens of your constituency.
Get to know the assets owned by these candidates as declared in the previous election and current election.
Get to know whether any pending criminal cases are there against the candidates.
Make sure you go to the polling booth well informed about all the candidates and their credentials.
If you are not satisfied with any of the candidates, declare to the Polling Officer, your intention not to vote under 49 (O) and demand for an entry in the register and both sign. This is a must to ensure no one else votes against your name.
